Riven is the most impulsive, competitive, cynical and goal-oriented member of the Specialists (nothing good basically). He can be rather hot-headed, experiencing moments of envy and blind aggression; but he's also protective and caring.
At first he was arrogant and mean-spirited, which often put him at odds with the rest of the Winx and Specialists. However, he was also thin-skinned and sensitive to what people thought about him.
Despite his initially unfriendly attitude, Riven is shown to have a conscience early on. He can be reflective when not blinded by his anger and acknowledges disliking several things about himself. Eventually he becomes noticeably friendlier, more cooperative and more compassionate and relaxed. Yet remains a straightforward, blunt and vocal about his opinions.
When he first met Musa he was very elusive and basically didn't allow for her to come grow closer. At some point he confesses his feelings for her (great scene btw) and they start dating. They argue the most out of the 6 pairs, but as Riven gets a lil bit better he becomes more affectionate with Musa.
The good trait (so that he doesn't fall in the villain category): he's protective! now lets scratch all that bad stuff about this hunk of a guy, as Stella would say.
"Riven's initial wariness of people is believed to have originated from his mother, who abandoned him when he was younger (supposedly in pursuit of money). As a result, he has come to hate her. It seems he used to project those feelings of disdain and distrust unto others, which led to his difficulty with maintaining relationships in the beginning." This I got from the fan wiki. Idk how accurate it may be. Most of the stuff I put here comes from the wiki, plus some additions made by me and my interpretation of the show and comics.
I do think it's important to notice the difference between the Riven from the show and the one in the comics. In the show he gets a very subtle and poor growth, but in the comics they do him a little justice. Still, they didn't manage all of the character archs too well. The winx universe itself has a lot of potential. Musa, Tecna and Flora's stories are almost non-existent in the show, and the comics are a mix of adventures, not an organized story.
